How we run WordPress sites.
Every WordPress site we build, take over or look after is run to the same standards. The specialist pages go into the detail; this is the part they share.
Updates are tested before they reach the live site
Minor WordPress releases, which are mostly security fixes, are applied promptly. Major releases, and plugin and theme updates, are tested on a copy of the site first. On a store, the cart, checkout, payment processing and order creation are checked when the updates that touch them are applied.
Backups live somewhere else, and get restored
Off the server the site runs on, and restores are tested, because a backup nobody has restored is a guess.
We run the server underneath
Sites under our care run on our hosting, so the PHP version, the SSL certificate and the server are the same team's job as the WordPress updates. When WordPress and the server disagree, there is nobody else to call.
Built on the block editor, not a page builder
New builds use custom blocks and patterns rather than a heavy visual builder, which keeps pages light, content portable and the common changes obvious to whoever edits the site. Problem plugins, abandoned ones included, are flagged rather than left in place.

Taking over a site someone else built.
It is one of the most common reasons people call us: the developer has moved on, stopped replying, or the agency closed. Most of these sites are recoverable. What happens first:
- Access. The domain registrar, the hosting, DNS, the WordPress admin, analytics. If you have none of it, say so; owning the domain or the business is usually a way back in.
- Preserve what's there. Before anything changes, we keep a copy of the site as it is whenever that is technically possible, so there is always a way back and a record of what was there.
- Read it. Which theme, which plugins do real work, which ones are abandoned or licensed to someone who has left, what was edited directly, what the database holds that the admin doesn't show.
- A plain account. What's solid, what's risky and what it would cost to put right, before we change anything.
From there it is usually either WordPress maintenance for a site worth keeping, or development work for one that needs fixing properly first. If the site has to move hosts on the way, that is a migration.
Same ownership since 1999
A lot of the sites we take over are in trouble for one reason: the person who built them is no longer around to answer. Oogle has been under the same ownership since 1999, through hand-built pages, WordPress, online stores and the servers underneath them.
That continuity is the point of how we work: a site we build or take over is written down, hosted by us and looked after by the company, not left in one person's head.
Is WordPress the right choice?
Not for every website. It is particularly strong when a business needs:
- Ownership and portability. The site, its content and its data are yours, and can move to another host or another developer.
- Custom functionality. Features built for how the business actually works, not bent around a template.
- Integrations. A CRM, a booking system, an email platform, accounting, whatever the business already runs on.
- Room to grow. A site that can be extended for years rather than replaced when it outgrows its platform.
- Control over content and SEO. Page structure, URLs, metadata and structured data, all yours to shape.
- WooCommerce. A store that lives inside the same site and connects to the same systems.
- Access to the code and the data. Nothing about the site is locked inside someone else's platform.
When something else fits better
If you need a very simple site and would rather have a closed, managed platform with as little technical responsibility as possible, Squarespace or Wix can be the right answer.
For some ecommerce businesses, where the store is the whole business, Shopify may be the better fit. Content and permissions that need tight governance can point to Drupal, which we also build and support.

Can we update the site ourselves?
Yes, that's the point. We set the editor up so the common changes are obvious, and walk your team through it before launch. Under Website Care, two Quick Fixes a month cover the small changes you'd rather hand to us.
How long does a WordPress website take?
It depends on how many templates and content types there are, what has to be migrated and, most of all, how ready the content is. You get a timeline with the quote, before anything starts.
Do you use a page builder?
Not on new builds. We use the block editor with custom blocks. We do work on sites built with page builders, and we can move them off one when that is worth doing.
Is hosting included?
With Website Care and Website Care Plus, yes: the site runs on our hosting, with a CDN. For one-time and project work we work on sites wherever they are hosted.
Is SEO included?
Website Care Plus includes onsite SEO, kept up rather than done once. Ongoing SEO and marketing beyond that is quoted on its own.
Are you WordPress.org or WordPress.com?
No. Oogle is an independent company that builds and looks after self-hosted WordPress sites. For a WordPress.com account or billing question, WordPress.com's own support is the right place.
